At SIOL Skincare, I spend countless hours researching ingredients, reading scientific literature, and testing products. As someone who has lived with sensitive skin and eczema for most of my life, I know firsthand how important a healthy skin barrier is.
People often ask me which barrier creams I use myself. While I formulate my own products at SIOL, I also believe there is value in learning from well-formulated products that have earned the trust of dermatologists and consumers around the world. Studying these products helps me continue improving every formula I create.
What I Look For in a Barrier Cream
A great barrier cream should do more than simply moisturize. It should help strengthen the skin’s natural protective barrier by reducing water loss, calming irritation, and supporting long-term skin health.
When I evaluate a barrier cream, I look for:
- Skin-identical lipids such as ceramides
- Humectants that attract water into the skin
- Ingredients that soothe redness and irritation
- A formula that supports the skin without feeling heavy or greasy
- Fragrance-free or low-irritation formulations for sensitive skin
Ceramides
Ceramides are naturally found in healthy skin and act like the “glue” that holds skin cells together. As we age, ceramide levels decline, which can contribute to dryness and a weakened barrier.
Why SIOL uses them:
- Helps strengthen the skin barrier
- Reduces moisture loss
- Improves softness and elasticity
- Supports long-term skin health
Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5)
Panthenol is one of my favorite soothing ingredients because it helps calm irritated skin while attracting moisture.
Why SIOL uses it:
- Soothes redness
- Supports skin repair
- Increases hydration
- Leaves skin feeling comfortable
Squalane
Squalane closely resembles the skin’s own natural oils, making it an excellent moisturizer without feeling greasy.
Why SIOL uses it:
- Locks in hydration
- Softens rough skin
- Supports the skin’s protective barrier
- Suitable for most skin types
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Niacinamide is one of the most well-studied skincare ingredients available.
Why SIOL uses it:
- Supports natural ceramide production
- Helps reduce redness
- Improves barrier function
- Brightens the appearance of uneven skin tone
Hyaluronic Acid (Multiple Molecular Weights)
Healthy skin needs water. That’s why SIOL uses different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid to provide hydration at multiple levels of the skin’s surface.
Why SIOL uses it:
- Draws moisture into the skin
- Helps skin appear smoother
- Improves plumpness
- Supports long-lasting hydration
Ectoin
Ectoin is one of my favorite modern skincare ingredients. It helps protect skin from environmental stress while supporting barrier recovery.
Why SIOL uses it:
- Helps calm stressed skin
- Supports hydration
- Protects against environmental stressors
- Strengthens the skin barrier over time
Centella Asiatica
Known for centuries as a soothing botanical, Centella is excellent for sensitive or irritated skin.
Why SIOL uses it:
- Helps calm irritation
- Supports skin recovery
- Reduces the appearance of redness
- Encourages healthier-looking skin
Allantoin
Allantoin is a gentle ingredient that helps soften and comfort dry, stressed skin.
Why SIOL uses it:
- Soothes irritation
- Softens rough patches
- Supports healthy skin renewal
Glycerin
Sometimes the simplest ingredients are the most effective. Glycerin remains one of the gold standards for hydration.
Why SIOL uses it:
- Attracts water into the skin
- Helps prevent dehydration
- Keeps skin smooth and comfortable
Why I Chose These Ingredients
When I created SIOL’s barrier products, I didn’t chase trends or social media hype. I chose ingredients backed by research and by what I’ve learned through years of studying skincare formulation.
Every ingredient has a purpose. Together, they help replenish moisture, calm irritation, support the skin barrier, and leave skin healthier over time.
My philosophy has always been simple: beautiful skin begins with a healthy barrier. When you protect your barrier first, everything else in your skincare routine works better.
